This is really the crux of it and the hard part when we, or at least I, discuss race in this country.
And not in any sentimental way either. Sentimentality, the American tendency towards emotionalism, obscures the path to progress.
It goes without saying that our only real chance is “to love each other.”
But we have to tell each other the truth first. Love cannot bear the weight of constant lies.
That dynamic too quickly deteriorates into abuse.
